Okay so I’ve decided that the month of September is going to be the first month I complete a financial challenge. Today marks the start of the ‘No Take-Out Challenge’.
I’ve got some good reasons for this, one being a financial one of course. Take-out for us can range anywhere from $20 at a fast food joint to $60+ at a chain restaurant. And that’s not with apps or drinks or anything – just a meal and soda or juice.
For $50 I can get steaks, potatoes, veggies, a loaf of fresh bread, dessert, and still have money left over. And we don’t eat like that every day (hardly ever, actually).
We’re definitely a meat and potatoes kind of family, and my daughter is kind of strangely addicted to asparagus. Chicken and asparagus is her favorite meal. (She loves hummus too – my 4 year old connoisseur!)
So in an attempt to not only save money, but help expand her palate, teach her how to cook, and eat healthier in this house – we’re fasting from take-out (actually, eating out entirely – in restaurant or not) for the month.
Only one tiny exception: I’m on a work trip for a few days and without a kitchen (or being with the family), not eating out is going to be pretty much impossible. But it’s a work trip, so that’s kind of different.
Anyway… I’d love to have you join my challenge, and let me know how you’re doing. I’ll be posting recipes we try, and keeping you up to date on how much I spent on food for the three of us at the grocery store that week. Menus and all.
My GOAL is to spend less than $500 at the grocery store for the month, and with the exception of my work trip, not eating out at all.
Are you in?
